Itinerary for the 7-day Rongai route Kilimanjaro hiking
Arrival Day: Kilimanjaro Airport to Moshi
Your adventure begins with your arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, where you’ll be transferred to Moshi. In Moshi, you’ll meet your guides for a detailed briefing and preparation session for the climb. This evening, you’ll stay in a comfortable hotel, getting a good night’s rest before the trek begins.
Day 1: Nalemuru Gate to Simba Camp
The first day starts with a drive to Nalemuru Gate, the starting point of the Rongai route. After completing registration, you will begin your trek through cultivated fields and pine forests. The trail gradually ascends to Simba Camp, located at 2,671 meters (8,760 feet). This initial hike takes about 4-5 hours, offering stunning views and a chance to acclimatize.
Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp
On the second day, the trail continues through moorland, with magnificent views of Kibo and the eastern ice fields on the crater rim. You will trek for about 3-4 hours to reach Second Cave Camp, situated at 3,450 meters (11,319 feet). This camp provides a beautiful setting and an excellent spot for acclimatization.
Day 3: Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Camp
Day three involves a 6-7 hour hike to Kikelewa Camp at 3,600 meters (11,811 feet). The path becomes steeper, and the landscape more rugged. You will pass through unique alpine vegetation and enjoy expansive views of the surrounding wilderness. Kikelewa Camp is nestled in a sheltered valley with giant groundsels and lobelias.
Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
The fourth day takes you to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located at 4,330 meters (14,206 feet). This 4-5 hour trek is shorter but steeper, as you approach the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. The camp sits beside a picturesque tarn (mountain lake) in the shadow of Mawenzi Peak, offering a dramatic and stunning landscape.
Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut
On the fifth day, you will hike for about 5-6 hours across the lunar desert of the "Saddle" between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Kibo Hut, located at 4,700 meters (15,420 feet), will be your base for the final summit push. This camp provides a good opportunity for rest and preparation for the early morning ascent to Uhuru Peak.
Day 6: Kibo Hut to Summit and Back to Horombo Hut
Summit day starts around midnight, as you begin the challenging ascent to Uhuru Peak. The climb to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim is steep and demanding, taking about 6-8 hours. From Gilman’s Point, it’s another 1-2 hours to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). After celebrating your achievement, you will descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, and then continue down to Horombo Hut at 3,720 meters (12,205 feet), making this a long but incredibly rewarding day.
Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate and Departure
The final day involves a descent through the moorland and rainforest zones to Marangu Gate, taking about 5-7 hours. At the gate, you will receive your summit certificates and say farewell to your guides and porters. A vehicle will transfer you back to Moshi for a well-deserved rest. From Moshi, you can proceed with your onward travel plans, carrying unforgettable memories of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
